Body paragraph

Paul Haggis uses cinematography techniques to develop the concept of power status and control. One main scene where this is used is when officer john Ryan sexually assaults Christine, the techniques used were the positioning of the camera as the cameras when looking at officer Ryan were lower and made him look more powerful and strong whereas the woman’s camera shot was up high looking down on her making her look powerless and fragile. These camera techniques unconsciously make us think of people’s relevance and power they make the good look small and the bad look strong.”Get your filthy fucking hands off me” this sudden realization of the horror happening gives us the viewer a sense of dread, nausea as the close-up camera zooms in and we can see the devastation on Christine’s face and these sort of cinematography techniques creates a feeling of sympathy and empathy for her. We also see this type of dialogue when after the incident Christine and Cameron are silent in the car and then a burst of anger unleashes. When the silence is still going on, we see the camera angle change as the positioning of it shows the sadness upon Cameron’s face and we feel sorry for him as we know due to his skin color he couldn’t have done anything to stop it, and the camera angle creates a victim like presence to him. The director’s intentions for using this is that the prejudice concept is further developed as the minorities are viewed as small and unprotected from society as the camera angle makes them look like victims and targets by using close-ups and bird-eye views and when the white cops are on camera the angles create this sense of power and strength from full shots and establishing shots.

Brief Summary

Several stories are told during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of characters, such as a police detective with a drug addict mother, a thieving younger brother. Two car thieves who are constantly haunting on society and race, the white district attorney and his irritated wife, a racist white veteran cop (caring for a sick father at home) who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner, a successful Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with the racist cop, a Persian-immigrant father who buys a gun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets.

Discuss a Character

Officer John Ryan appears to be extremely racist in his multiple encounters with African Americans. Although officer Ryan is an extremely verbal person, his use of nonverbal communication speaks even louder. this character stands out to me as it shows how downgrading and racist society and it shows how only 19 years ago it was completely different. Officer John Ryan also showed groping a woman, this surprised me as it showed he thought that because he had a semi-important job that he had superior value over everyone and thought he could do whatever he wanted. Officer John Ryan I think was a very egotistical person as he uses his ego as a power to get woman rather than his personality

Directors Intentions

There is an underlining moral to the film is to treat others with respect and have tolerance towards people of all kinds, regardless of race, gender, or age. Haggis promotes this moral theme throughout the film by constantly bringing up the issue of race. The storyline of the film follows the daily lives of several people and shows how people get abused or mistreated just due to their gender or race. This time when the movie was made racism and sexism was happening a lot and wasn’t educated to be wrong and this movie was showing how the issues are wrong and disgraceful and showed how what people thought was a small problem was occurring to people every day and that this lifestyle for people was wrong.

How did Haggis use stereotypes to manipulate viewers

Intro

In this passage I will be talking about how; The Great Gatsby is linked to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I will then furthermore talk about how The Winter Dreams is connected to The curious case of Benjamin Button. My last paragraph will be on the Fitzgerald short story The Ice Palace and how it is linked to The Winter Dreams, I will be describing how the golden girl is used in these passages and how it is portrayed.

Text 1

The great gatsby is about the protagonist of the novel Jay Gatsby he was wanting to live the American dream the novel focuses on the concept of the green light as it shows hope for gatsby and daisys love, Gatsby is the mysterious and wealthy neighbor of the narrator, Nick Carraway, we know that Gatsby is mysterious because people when going to his house for parties he held would always make up rumors, for example he went to Oxford, he was a spy in the great war and he has killed a man. some of these were true like he did go to Oxford and he was in the war but we don’t know about the others. Although we know little about Gatsby we know from Nick’s introduction that Gatsby’s story will be the focus of the novel. As the novel progresses and Nick becomes increasingly drawn into Gatsby’s complicated world we start to learn what Gatsby wants. Daisy, Nick’s cousin the girl he once loved is still the woman of his dreams. Anything and anyone that stands between Gatsby and Daisy become an antagonist. Although Daisy’s husband Tom is the most obvious antagonist a variety of more abstract concepts, such as class difference, societal expectations, and Gatsby’s past lies between them.

During the Great Gatsby, Jay the main character had an always passionate love for Daisy Buchanan. There was also a level mystery about Jay, no one really knew the true story about him, whether if he was a German spy or if he had killed a man or even if he went to oxford. Daisy was an image of Fitzgeralds dream girl and this meant that what she is in real life is different from what she is in the novel, this is linked to benjamin button as Benjamin the boy who was born a man had fallen in love with a young daisy, as the movie grows on the couple become separated as benjamin goes to help out the war, whilst on his boating adventure6s he meets the woman who tried to swim across the river Thames, Elizabeth. she was special to benjamin but the was always a place in his heart for daisy. as he returned home he once again met with daisy. this love than became very strong and they had a baby girl. the struggle intensifies as benjamin realizes daisy cant take care of 2 babies and decides to move out and live at the old persons home. he then meets up with daisy at his daughter’s dance practice and meets Daisys husband realizing he isn’t a part of her life anymore he walks back to the old people’s home to spend his last years. as he grows younger he begins to have dementia as he is an old man in a child’s body. this meant when daisy comes to talk to him and catch up he doesn’t realize who she is and for the final few years of his life daisy looked after him and eventually died. the link to this is the love connection of always being there.

in the short story, winter dreams, the character Dexter green had dreamt about him and Judy playing golf.  He spends every winter waiting for the sun to melt the snow on the Sherry Island Golf Course so that he can caddy for the summer. Dexter has a natural attraction to the world of the wealthy. We can tell that he is better at mingling with the upper class than the other caddies because when he quits his caddying job, Mr. Mortimer Jones (the man he caddied for) said that Dexter is “The best caddy I ever saw”. it had been nine years since Dexter Green had quit his job at the golf course he caddied at and since he left he has gone to college on the East Coast and has come back to Minnesota and invested in the laundry business. Dexter an up-and-coming rich guy. He now plays golf with the people he used to caddy for before he left. Just as it seems Judy Jones comes back into his life the girl he has always loved. He meets Judy on a swimming platform in the middle of Black Bear Lake. Dexter realizes that he has always wanted Judy, but Judy doesn’t want Dexter back in the same way. This is the same in Benjamin Button in a way as when he went away to go to war he loved daisy and even after being away for a while he still comes back and loves her. Dexters’ love for Judy is the same as a concept for a golden girl, the golden girl is an idea of the ‘perfect girl’ this is obviously not real as there is no true meaning of the golden girl.

Text 3 + 4

The ice palace has two main concepts, relationships, and home. Because of her and Harry’s engagement, she moves to Harry’s hometown in the north, She brushes off her concerns, making her realize she needs something more in her life, a need to see “things happen on a big scale”. During the winter weather her growing regret with the decision to move north, until her moment in the town’s local “Ice Palace”. In the end, Sally Carrol returns home. this made her realize how much she loves her friends and family back at home. The concept of the golden girl is described by how the golden girl is not possible as everyone has flaws even if they a perfect looking. this is also used in the winter dreams as Judy has been portrayed as the ‘golden girl’. this was when Dexter Green left to go pursue his dream and then upon his arrival, he met again with Judy and realized he was still greatly in love with her but Fitzgerald portrays this message to make you feel like that perfect girl is possible as when in reality this figure isn’t a reality. This perfect ‘golden girl’ idea was portrayed as Fitzgerald’s wife.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the passages wrote by Fitzgerald all have some sort of ‘golden girl’ concept in them. This was portrayed by Zelda Fitgerald his wife. this was because she was considered the ‘perfect girl’ and she had the perfect body with all the money and fame but during her lifetime she had mental problems and got put in an insain asilum. where she died. this was where the idea that the golden girl was not a reality because of the mental issues that could happen inside these ‘perect women’.

describe a memorable idea(Green Light)

the memorable idea is the idea of the green light, this idea was the idea of hope in the future for gatsby and daisy this was because gatsby hoped to be with a daisy in the future.it also symbolized gatsby hope for money. This green light first appeared in Chapter 1 and continues to pop up all the way through the book.

“Involuntarily, I glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away that might have been at the end of a dock” this green light on the dock outside daisys house was memorable as it pops up a lot in the movie and always has a key role in the book. The story is about gatsby wanting to find love with daisy but when daisy marries tom Buchanan things get hard for gatsby. so this green light of hope means that there is always a possibility for them to get together. “So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning fork that had been struck upon a star” this quote was when Gatsby is waiting for a moment before kissing Daisy so as to mark the end of a chapter of his life and the beginning of another, where Daisy is everything to him. this was a key moment in the green light idea as it may be found to be true.

in Chapter 1 gatsby tries reaching toward it and in the darkness as a guiding light to lead him to his goal. Because Gatsby’s quest for Daisy is linked with the American dream the green light also symbolizes that more generalized idea. In Chapter 9 Nick compares the green light to how America is rising out of the ocean, must have looked to early settlers of the new nation.  When Gatsby reveals his knowledge of the green light to Daisy after their reunion Nick observes and states “Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever his count of enchanted objects had diminished by one” for Gatsby the green light proved that he and Daisy existed in the same world and suggested the possibility that they might someday meet again. During the book, we see Gatsby struggle and fail

Now and then task short story

Silently passing by me the lively kids leap, skip and play around the picturesque landscape not worrying about anything, the ultimate freedom, I hear the giggles and laughter of the free children. Whilst I walk around the amber trees the heavy smells of the cherry blossom flowers dash around me, filling my nose with breath-taking smells. Slowly strolling through the endless woods the yellow bricked path leads the way. The sounds of elegant birds chirp around me bombarding my ears. Sweeping my hands through the overgrown luscious grass it engulfs me in a maze environment that I cant escape. Approaching the top of the hill I parade to a patch of cut grass, it lays under a single old oak tree as it guards the woods like a king. Sitting at the very top a checkered sheet lays with me friends awaiting my arrival. As the hot apple pie melts in my mouth the flavours distract me, the struggles of life flow away, the setting sun disappears over the snowy mountains that therapeutically heals me. looking over at the glooming lights from the village below the families full of love go to the latest festival, as it comes to an end I can still smell the food trucks selling leftovers for free. The stars glistening over Namche Bazzar make the snowy mountain tops sparkle like glitter all around us. we head to the huts where the fire lays with a rich song of warmth to surround us as we begin are descending slumber…

Burnt and broken my legs struggle to walk through the disappearing woods, in the silence peoples souls search in hope of a living amber tree, to reassure that there is still life and happiness that used to live. It had been years since the sound of birds chirping echoed through the valley, not remembering the sound the mind cant help but think when the last time someone saw one and how mindless they could have been not knowing how it would change. Walking lonely through this scary darkness, the black intimidating clouds lurk over my presence reminding me of the thoughts of death and sorrow . slowly hobbling through the endless deathening woods I to find my childhood memories. Due to the extreme climate heating, the old luteous mysterious woods didn’t stand a chance, destroyed, the extreme temperatures continuously burn the woods down to the floor and had been too severe for animals to survive. You hear in the distance anther species has been announced extinct over the beaming speakers, echoing through the endless valleys. As I mope back to my lonely car through the rubble I couldn’t help but notice the emptiness of the city and how silent it was, it felt like a dream I never wanted to happen. Looking through my broken car windows the indigenous fog blocks the outside world, the sterilising car radio shakes the quietness. The mountain tribes do the evening war cry the scream put a deathening shock down your spine and crawls inside to haunt you. As the night comes to an end the hikers join me on the adventure upwards to reach the top. The tiredness in their eyes shows the struggles of life and the hope of a new begining

Analysis

1)

Daisy Spoiled since birth and is married to tom buchanan they live in east egg with their daughter, it is still u known whether she loves tom or Gatsby she obviously wanted to go with tom enitionaly because he had money and at the time gatsby didn’t so now that gatsby has an unreal amount of money that he flexes, eg his library and his regular saturday parties daisy is contemplating for whom to go with but as it was revealed at the end of the book she was having affairs with gatsby all along

Daisy Buchanan

She was known as a ‘golden girl’ this is because on the outside she is this perfect, nostalgic and delicate person but as we can see she towards the end she is has a second side a dark person a evil inside she is a careless and betrayal person who can’t be trusted.

Gatsby

Hard working respected man who lives alone in west egg and is in love with daisy but also has a mysterious background that no one knows and he has a party in his mansion every saturday this character is always revealing that he is never what you think he is and is always curious to know what is going on though the text we can also see him chang by he was in love with daisy when he was younger but he didn’t have the money to win her over so now at the end of the novel we can see he is now trying really hard to win daisy back we can also tell his emotional state is bad because when he went over to daisys in the last chapter he told tom that she never loved him and she always loved gatsby so he is here releasing all the anger out and coming straight with tom.

He then turns into this person who’s been revealed and now has no secrets and starts to get more angry as it crawls to the end because he starts getting tired of daisy not leaving tom already

Nick

Nick is the narrator of this story and after being educated at Yale and fighting in World War I, he goes to New York City to learn the bond business. Honest, tolerant, and inclined to reserve judgment was his morals but as we see through this book his morals are broken and he starts to judge people and lies about things.Nick started to reserve all judgements because his father influence told him to reserve all judgements

2)

Illusion

Daisy”s illusion is that she represents a perfect person who has no flaws but the illusion is that she ends up being this sensitive and broken down person this was revealed when she ran over myrtle

3)

Relationships

a relationship that we see in the novel that has the idea of being false is a relationship between daisy and tom this can be seen as fake because when we see daisy with tom throughout the book there is never show actual emotion or love when they are seen together, this also reflects back to when gatsby was at daisy’s house and was trying to get daisy to say that she doesn’t really love tom and that she only married him because when gatsby was younger he didn’t have much money and therefore she wanted someone that had money and at the time it was tom we can see in this passage”I’ve got something to tell you, old sport…Your wife doesn’t love you,…She’s never loved you. She loves me.” we can now see here that gatsby is trying really hard to get daisy back and to tell tom that she really doesnt love him. This was a factor going through toms head throughout the day and made him angry, upset, confused and he felt like he needed to know the truth.

wild, but she came out with an absolutely perfect reputation.
Perhaps because she doesn’t drink. It’s a great advantage not
to drink among hard-drinking people. You can hold your
tongue and, moreover, you can time any little irregularity of your own so that everybody else is so blind that they
don’t see or care. Perhaps Daisy never went in for amour at
all—and yet there’s something in that voice of hers….
Well, about six weeks ago, she heard the name Gatsby for
the first time in years. It was when I asked you—do you remember?—if you knew Gatsby in West Egg. After you had
gone home she came into my room and woke me up, and
said ‘What Gatsby?’ and when I described him—I was half
asleep—she said in the strangest voice that it must be the
man she used to know. It wasn’t until then that I connected
this Gatsby with the officer in her white car.
When Jordan Baker had finished telling all this we had
left the Plaza for half an hour and were driving in a Victoria
through Central Park. The sun had gone down behind the
tall apartments of the movie stars in the West Fifties and
the clear voices of girls, already gathered like crickets on the
grass, rose through the hot twilight:
‘I’m the Sheik of Araby,
Your love belongs to me.
At night when you’re are asleep,
Into your tent I’ll creep——’
‘It was a strange coincidence,’ I said.
‘But it wasn’t a coincidence at all.’

the starting couple of lines are talking about how daisy coming fro chicago had a perfect reputation, she wasn’t bad at all she was a “Golden Girl” and yet it is shown that she does not like to drink around heavy drinkers this could imply that she doesn’t like/want to get drunk, this might be because “you can hold your tongue” this might refer back to the fact that she has this perfect reputation because she doesn’t get drunk and its because she wants to know what she is doing and she doesn’t want to get hurt so being sober would help this. The next point in this text is that she hears the name gatsby after the first time in years
